We have a great line up this year for the NANPS AGM. It's your second chance to snap up NANPS-approved local native plants at our sale. LEAF will have an info table and be available to answer your questions about the Emerald Ash Borer, tree planting and maintenance. Bid early and bid often in our silent auction. While you may be voter-weary with all the elections we've had in the past year, please consider running for an elected position on the NANPS Board. At least the only plants they discuss are of a botanical nature.
If you can't attend the meeting, please send your nominations or proxy votes to the Secretary.

Torontonians: Petition to save Environmental and Urban Agriculture Programs!

Ontarians: Stop the Mega Quarry in Melancthon Twp.
A numbered company operated under Highland Companies, a Boston-based hedge fund run by the Baupost Group proposes to excavate the largest quarry in Canada, the 2nd largest in North America. The Mega Quarry would be a 2,316 acre open pit limestone "mine" on prime farmland 100 km northwest of Toronto. 600 million litres of water per day in perpetuity would be pumped out and with unproven technology, injected back into the water table via wells. With the possibility of contamination, this could be the next "Walkerton" but on a much larger scale.

If the Mega Quarry proposal is adopted, it would remove prime farmland, local producers of 50% of the potatoes consumed in the GTA. It would affect five watersheds including the Grand, Nottawasaga, and Pine Rivers and other sub-watersheds. And to put the threat in the NANPS sphere, the quarry would abut the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, home to 40% of Ontario's rare flora along with numerous at-risk species.

Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo fame, Ron Sexsmith, Hayden, Sarah Harmer, Cuff the Duke and lots of other entertainers will be lending their talent.
