December 2011 - The Local Scoop

Backyard blanket (all is quiet in the land of cedars & nodding heads of Monarda)
Merry Winter Solstice!
Year End Stuffing - Green Giving
If you are feeling flushed, and not in the spiked egg nog sense, and inclined, please give generously to your fave charities. They can all use the support. Many charities have donations in honour or in memory of a special loved one. Of course, we push the NANPS contingent and our educational agenda. There are also many other wonderful, charitable organizations that are doing as much as they can to save habitat, which we know, means saving the plants and animals and those in between; agencies including Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), Ontario Nature (ON), Coalition on the Niagara Escarpment (CONE), Bruce Trail Conservancy (BTC), STORM Coalition (Save the Oak Ridges Moraine), Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Fund, Earthroots, and many more. They issue official Taxus canadensis receipts.
If you are a little tapped out in the wallet department, spare a few taps on the keyboard and give a thought or two to some species at risk such as the threatened Victorin’s Gentian (Gentianopsis virgata ssp. victorinii). Submit comments about the proposed Recovery Strategy by February 11, 2012. Or for the Cryptic Paw Lichen (Nephroma occultum) by February 21, 2012. Habitat protection for this lichen will also protect other flora and fauna that reside in the same old-growth habitat in B.C.
Quick Calendar picks to wrap up the year - TV docs on TVO

Scoop's New Year's Resolution
Counter to the loosing weight scenarios that most propose and end up failing by the end of the first month, the Scoop is going out in very slim fashion before bulking up for a couple of special back-to-back issues in the New Year.
